چکیده

The use of liquid brominated hydrocarbons to form a planar reflecting interface with water is described. Gravity-based planar reflecting surfaces with known reflection coefficients can be used in system characterization for quantitative ultrasonics, and a set of surfaces with a range of reflection coefficients allows calibration of the output power and receiver gain of ultrasonic imaging systems. The substances reported here are immiscible in water and form interfaces with water, resulting in a broad range of acoustic reflection coefficients. Reflection coefficients were measured at temperatures from 18–24°C for “pure” substances and for mixtures of two brominated hydrocarbons. Results show that reflection coefficients are weakly dependent on temperature and that, at a specific temperature, a significant range of arbitrarily small reflection coefficients is available, in the case of the mixtures, by the appropriate choice of weight-percents of the two brominated hydrocarbons. The nonstationary variation in the noise performance of the cross-correlation-based strain estimator due to frequency-dependent attenuation and lateral and elevational signal decorrelation have been addressed theoretically in recent papers using the strain-filter approach. In this paper, we present the experimental verification and corroboration of the nonstationary effects on the strain estima...

In this paper we propose a novel feature-based contrast enhancement approach to enhance the quality of noisy ultrasound (US) images. Our approach uses a phase-based feature detection algorithm, followed by sparse surface interpolation and subsequent nonlinear postprocessing. We first exploited the intensity-invariant property of phase-based acoustic feature detection to select a set of relevant...

Elastic properties of tendon were assessed by two different approaches. Six fresh bovine Achilles tendon specimens were used. The first approach directly measured Young’s modulus along the transverse direction (Eperpendicular) and the longitudinal direction (Eparallel), using a cyclic compression–relaxation method. Young’s moduli were derived based on the measured strain and stress values. The ...

This study consisted of two parts. In the first part, the contrast-transfer efficiency (CTE) in elastography was extended to account for continuous changes of modulus distribution. It was shown that, for a finite size background, the strain contrast approaches the modulus contrast in the case of Gaussian distributions. Thus, an increase in the CTE was obtained. For a fixed background size, it w...

Using catheter-mounted 2-D array transducers, we have obtained real-time 3-D intracardiac ultrasound (US) images. We have constructed several transducers with 64 channels inside a 12 French catheter lumen operating at 5 MHz. The transducer configuration may be side-scanning or beveled, with respect to the long axis of the catheter lumen. We have also included six electrodes to aquire simultaneo...
